My name is Madeleine Kelly, but I usually go by Maddy. I am a biology student here at Wittenberg University, and I might even get a French minor, if time permits. I am the fourth of five children, and the oldest girl out of the two girls in my family. Here at Wittenberg I am involved in the crew team, where we practice and compete at the collegiate level in regattas during the spring and fall. I am also currently going through recruitment here in hopes in becoming a part of the Greek life here at Wittenberg.
My family is big into the outdoors and being outside whenever possible. Ever since I was little my family has always gone on camping trips that have lasted several days. It was from these trips that I learned, from my dad, how to make fires, or how to fish from my grandpa. Some of the greatest memories that I have from my childhood are centered around being outside, together with my family. Even if we are not camping, my family will still sit outside and have dinners on summer nights or make warm fires on cool fall evening. On nice summer evening or even cold snowy nights, we go for walks, just to enjoy the outdoors. My family loves to go hiking, in addition to camping. One of our favorite places to go in Ohio is the Hocking Hills. We love bringing our dog with us and just wandering around in the piece and quite, looking at the trees and flowers.
Since my family has made the outdoors such a big part of our lives, we view and understand all the issues with saving the planet and we try to do what is best for the environment. My parents even attached rain barrels to the gutters in our house so they could provide fresh rain water to our vegetable garden. We use our vegetable garden to grow herbs and simple vegetables that we use in our cooking. In addition, we have three chickens that live in a playhouse that we converted into a chicken coop. The chickens allow us to have extremely fresh eggs and their poop is a great fertilizer for our gardens.
